International Yoga Centre (IYC) Singapore offers classes with experienced teachers, responsive to the needs of students. They are on hand to help foster sensitivity to the language of intuition of the body and breath. The teacher is simply an outer guide, urging the student to reconnect within. Our dedicated, compassionate instructors have been trained and have been inspired by wisdom drawn from the best of the traditions; incorporating knowledge of body, movement, alignment, rhythm of breath and flow. They have started and are continuing on their own journey inwards.

Sam Lim

Sam's first experience in yoga happened in 2001 at a local fitness centre.  What followed was a weekly class which slowly led to a search for something beyond the physical.  In 2005, Sam obtained teaching certification by the International Yoga Teachers' Association.  Sam has also completed successfully the
two-year Advanced Studies / Teacher Training Programme at IYC, Singapore, 2007-09.

To Sam, yoga has been a process of moving forwards and going back to basics, extending outwards and returning to the source of inner spaciousness.

He continues to enjoy classes with his teacher Joan Seow, as well as attending workshops by visiting international teachers, exploring and discovering lightness and openness in his practice... as well as in life.

Shan

Shan has been practising Yoga for 9 years, since 2000, and has been teaching for the past 6 years. Shan studied under various teachers in Singapore and London in Hatha, Ashtanga, and most recently completed her teacher's training in Yin Yoga in 2009, as well as in various other metaphysical practices.

With a deep interest in the workings of the human physical, mental and
spiritual anatomy, Shan continually seeks greater insight as both a student and a teacher, completing her diploma in Yoga Therapy in 2006, is a trained massage therapist from the The Wat Po Traditional Medical School in Thailand graduating in 2003, and obtained her first degree in Usui Reiki in London in 2002.

Shan holds the core tenet that learning is a never-ending journey, and that should apply to learning outside of the physical realm. As such, to her, both practicing and teaching Yoga are more than just physical activities, but hold fascinating pockets and moments of life's unravellings.

When you inhale, you are taking the strength from God.  When you exhale, it represents the service you are giving to the world.  ~B.K.S. Iyengar

Fen

Fen chanced upon yoga during her tertiary days and since then, yoga practice has become part of her daily routine. Fen started her Iyengar and Shadow yoga practice with Joan Seow Harakuma since 2004.

She became a full time yoga teacher in 2006 after the 200-hr teacher training certification by Yoga Arts (Australia). She continues her learning with Joan and completed the 500-hr Advanced Studies Teacher Training Programme in 2009 at IYC. Her style of teaching is strongly influenced by the Iyengar tradition with emphasis on body alignment and breath. She encourages students to stay truthful to their inner guide and to open up to their own practice.

Fen continues to learn with Joan and attends workshops by world renowned teachers when she is not teaching. She enjoys continuous learning to deepen her knowledge and understanding of yoga, as well as improving her teaching skills. To her, yoga is a way of life, a way to explore the inner self for tranquility and space through working on the alignment of body, mind and breath.

Hsiu Yen

Hsiu Yen has been a student of Yoga since 2005. The positive transformations she experienced prompted her to embark on the 2-year Advanced Studies / Teacher Training Programme at IYC under Joan Seow, where she discovered the expanse of Yoga, beyond the physical efforts on the mat.

In 2009, Hsiu Yen started to teach, revolving her classes around the art of listening to the inner self. She sees her classes as a celebration of Yoga and also as a chance to share all that she has been given by her mentors and teachers.

Hsiu Yen continues to study under Joan at IYC, as well as attends courses with senior, international practitioners such as Ramanand Patel, Faeq Biria, Emma Balnaves and Peter Sterios.

Off the mat Hsiu Yen is a practicing architect. She enjoys the daily challenge of extending the mindful energy and joyful equanimity from the Yoga mat throughout the work day.

Nathalie

Nathalie’s first step into yoga was ten years ago at the Iyengar Centre in Paris where she discovered release from her busy working life.  In 2003, she moved to Singapore with her husband and two children and decided to dedicate herself to the study of yoga.  Day after day with curiosity and patience she explored body and mind.

To enrich her yogic knowledge she attended annual yoga retreats in the south of France under the guidance of Faeq Biria. In 2007 she joined the two-year Advanced Studies Teacher Training Program at the International Yoga Centre with Joan Seow.

Through the learning gained from the practice, Nathalie experienced a sense of balance and a deeper understanding of both Western and Eastern cultures.  Her teaching reflects that and she really enjoys seeing students able to find space in their bodies and inner peace.

Nathalie’s teaching is based on the Iyengar method, which develops strength, alignment and flexibility of body and mind.

Helen

Helen has been interested in Yoga for many years but only started to practice regularly in 2005 after meeting Joan Seow.  Helen has since been fortunate to study regularly with Joan at IYC, finishing IYC’s Advanced Studies / Teacher Training in June 2009.  Helen’s other teachers include Nancy Crum Stechert of Colorado, Ramanand Patel, Zhander Remete and Emma Balnaves.  They have influenced Helen, not only by giving guidance in the practice on the mat but have also helped her to transfer and apply the knowledge and experiences gained from the practice into “everyday life”.

Besides Yoga, Helen is interested in the ancient Indian health system of Ayurveda and has been to Kerala, India several times for Ayurvedic treatments and studies.

Daphne

Daphne’s interest in yoga first started due to her flexibility and ease of getting into what many would have called difficult/tight positions, such as touching one’s toes while keeping both legs and back straight like in “padangusthasana”.  This interest prompted her to try out Yoga classes in Community Centres to finally meeting and joining Como Shambhala’s Advanced Studies / Teacher’s Training Program in 2001, of which Joan Seow was the principal instructor.  This allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of yoga poses and yoga’s underlying values.  Being a Catholic, it was initially a difficult decision for her to participate in the Teacher’s Training Program as she was unsure of whether the practice would contradict any of her beliefs.  However, after much careful consideration, she joined and it has since given her much strength and peace of mind in many things she does.

Yoga enhances your sensitivity and perception no matter what the background may be.  Yoga is a form of physical exercise to keep you mentally and physically fit.  It is a balance between giving both your body and mind, strength and flexibility in your day to day lives.  Gaining flexiblility gives you openness and spaciousness in mind and breath, and allows you to be open to ideas and criticisms, allowing you joy in the decisions you have to make.  Gaining strength keeps your body fit and gives you the ability to endure tiring moments both in sports and in the decisions you have made.  May you enjoy every breath and stretch you take!

Sayaka

Sayaka started yoga in 2005.  She saw it as an opportunity to regain the health of mind and body during her busy working schedule. In 2007, she received her teaching certificate through the Institute of Vivekananda Yoga and Research Development.  In 2008, she was also certified with a Diploma in Yoga Therapy.

She taught as an instructor for two years at a local yoga studio and subsequently became independent.  She founded a yoga company and began teaching as a freelance yoga instructor.

She continues to enjoy studying yoga with her teacher Joan Seow, as well as enjoying her own journey inwards.
